The Creative Advantage, Part 1 of 4

Nobody is watching your ad

Woman yawning while pressing a giant lime green Skip button on her phone, under the headline Nobody is watching your ad

You paid good money for that ad. Your audience skipped it in a second and a half.

Not because they're rude. Because they can. The skip button, the ad blocker, the thumb-flick past your feed placement: your audience now has total veto power over your advertising and they use it without a second thought.

The numbers are brutal. Around 1.77 billion people worldwide now use ad blockers, roughly one in three internet users. On video platforms, 65% of viewers skip ads the instant they are allowed to and most admit it is pure reflex. They hit skip before they even know what the ad is for. Nielsen found that 64% of people actively take steps to avoid ads and 59% would happily pay a monthly subscription just to never see one again.

Sit with that last one for a moment. Most of your potential customers are willing to spend their own money specifically to avoid your ad.

The old deal is dead

Advertising used to work on a simple deal: buy the media, get the eyeballs. If your ad ran in the Thursday paper or the 6pm news break, people saw it because there was nowhere else to look.

That deal is gone. Media spend now buys you the opportunity to be seen, a fraction of a second in front of the right person. Whether they actually watch, read or remember anything is decided entirely by what you show them in that moment.

Every impression is now earned, not bought.

Why people really block Ads

When researchers ask people why they avoid advertising, the answers are refreshingly honest: there are too many ads, they get in the way and, most tellingly, they are irrelevant to the viewer.

People aren't avoiding advertising because it exists. They're avoiding it because most of it was never made for them in the first place. It interrupts what they were doing, talks about a company they've never heard of and offers them nothing in return for their attention.

Here is the flip side, and it's where the opportunity lives: the same research shows people voluntarily keep watching ads that are entertaining, personally relevant or genuinely useful. The skip button is not a death sentence. It is a filter that punishes lazy, self-interested advertising and rewards creative made with the audience in mind.

What this means for your next campaign

The convoluted media landscape isn't going to get simpler. Attention will keep getting harder to win. But that's only bad news for brands still making ads people want to escape.

For everyone else, it's the single biggest opportunity in advertising today. While your competitors pay to be ignored, creative that respects its audience earns the attention they're all losing.

Just how much is good creative worth? More than your media budget, your targeting and your brand combined. In the next post, we'll show you the numbers to prove it.

Frequently asked questions

Why do people skip ads?

Mostly out of habit. Research shows 65% of viewers skip video ads as soon as the skip button appears, and around three quarters say it's a reflex rather than a decision. The most common reasons people give for avoiding ads altogether are that there are too many of them, they get in the way and they're irrelevant to the viewer.

Do ad blockers really affect my advertising?

Yes. Around 1.77 billion people worldwide use ad blockers, roughly one in three internet users. In Australia the rate is close to the global average. If your campaign relies on standard display placements alone, a meaningful slice of your audience may never see it, which is why creative quality and channel mix matter so much.

What makes someone watch an ad instead of skipping it?

Research on skippable video ads shows viewers voluntarily keep watching ads that are entertaining, personally relevant or genuinely useful. Ads that lead with the audience's problem rather than the advertiser's name consistently hold attention longer.

Does good creative really make that much difference?

Yes. Nielsen Catalina Solutions found creative accounts for 49% of a brand’s sales lift from advertising, more than media reach, targeting and timing combined. Econometric research by Paul Dyson found a brilliant ad can generate up to twelve times the profit of an average one.
